Cara

I’m so fucking embarrassed the next day, I can’t even look at Eric at the breakfast table.

I flick around my Kindle, trying to make myself look distracted, even though there is no internet. I’m not reading anything as I watch Eric to see if there’s any awkwardness coming from him. I could just die of shame right here and now. Eric didn’t need to see me like that last night. After all this, that’s the last thing I needed to do.

So much for keeping that barrier up.

He doesn’t mention it though, and is instead chatting with Herbert as the valet makes us breakfast. I can’t listen to them over the pounding of my heartbeat in my ears and my compulsive counting, but I steal glances at their interactions as they laugh and talk to each other. There’s a father/son dynamic going on between them, and I try to hide my smile.

“…Cara?”

My name crashed through my thoughts, the only word that has made sense all morning. I blink and look up. “Hm?”

“Do you want to go bungee jumping today?” Eric asks, presumably for at least the second time.

I stare at him, aghast. “What?”

The corner of his mouth quirks up. “Bungee jumping. You jump off a high point and spring back with cords—”

“I know what bungee jumping is,” I say, annoyed. “But…what?”

Eric smirks and then turns his attention to Herbert. “Herbert, can you make a booking for us to go bungee jumping? The place where you dip your hands in the water at the bottom?”

I widen my eyes at how ludicrous that sounds.

“Yes, Sire,” Herbert says. He nods towards me. “For two?”

Before I can answer, Eric steps in. “For two. Unless Cara doesn’t want to go.”

They both look at me, waiting for me to say otherwise.

I’m too stunned to say no. Usually in situations like this, Phillip just makes the decision and I go along. But I’m a single woman and I can do whatever I want, whenever I want. “I’ll go,” I say, feeling a flash of pride at my new-found independence. And I’m fucking terrified.

“Very well then,” Herbert says. “Two it is.”

Eric gets a sly smile. “Join us, Herbert. I’m sure you’ll have a blast.”

“I’ll sit this one out, your Majesty,” the valet replies. “But thank you for thinking of me.”

Herbert nods again and marches to the great room to make a call. Obviously getting the hint that Eric wants us to be alone.

And that may be the last thing I want right now.

The prime numbers rattle off in my head as I wait for Eric to speak. Finally, I look at him and he’s watching me.

“Are you all right?” he asks softly.

“No,” I say incredulously. “I’m about to go bungee jumping when I’m not sure I want to.”

“You can say no at any time,” Eric says. “No one is making you do it.”

I nod. Still, somehow, I can’t bring myself to turn him down.

“But what I meant is,” he continues, “are you all right after last night?”

Am I? I wonder.
